The Sortes Sanctorum (the lots of the Saints), sometimes called the Sortes Apostolorum (the lots of the Apostles), was a mediaeval divination system with origins in the South of France.
The quasi religious flavour of the text, with its frequent exhortations to pray to God, may have been an attempt to escape the Church's disapproval of divination and fortune telling.
To consult the Sortes a period of prayer, fasting and religious devotion beforehand was recommended. Then the questioner rolled three dice and arranged the results in descending order to give one of 56 possible answers. For example, if a four, two and six were rolled then the numbers would be arranged six, four, two. To reveal the reply from the Sortes, the questioner would look up the book and find the text labelled 6, 4, 2.
This version of the Sortes was created using ChatGPT 3.5 to provide the code for the random dice roll. I used Bing Image Creator for the picture of the monk with the dice, and the help of Google Translate to provide English versions of the original Latin text.
